This very “Yiddishkeit” black comedy deals with the strains
and complexities facing young Jewish women today in dealing with the
responsibilities and expectations thrust upon them regarding commitment,
parenthood, religion and family. The three former “Kleinman”
sisters and their respective husbands/lovers meet at the Shiva of their
mother, Myra Kleinman, a hard and bitter woman, who has died as she
lived, unloving and unloved.
Andrea, the eldest, is a forty-something hard-headed business woman,
married to a gentle and ineffectual book shop owner named Paul. She
has assimilated into the larger world of American society, but somehow
can’t seem to entirely divest herself of her Brooklyn roots. In
her desperate desire to “make something of herself”, she
cannot quite escape the feeling that she has lost something too. She
and her husband lead a caustic yet deeply loving relationship. Susanna
is nearing forty, and has suffered multiple tragedies in her drive to
have a baby of her own. She is afraid her biological clock is ticking
down, and has retreated into the safety of newly-found Orthodox Judaism.
For her husband Marc this is nothing new, since over the years, at times
of emotional stress, Susanna has looked for answers in Christian Science,
Bahai and Buddhism. Marc is laid-back, mildly sarcastic and passionately
in love with his emotionally fragile wife. Adding to this volatile mix
is Jennifer, Myra’s mid-life baby, who at 19, has arrived home
from college with her decidedly non-Jewish fiancée Lukas and
an added surprise.
Sisters3 is a painful, funny and wry look at the way modern Jewish women
face all the options of living today, and how they cope, with wit, resilience
and occasional tears
